Destruction of the Beauty, Good and Sublime?

Posted on Oct 31st, 2007 by Albert : ~ Albert
I found this article in crescendo.de where for a Geman speaking audience opera and musical arts are written about. The Translation was made by Bablefish. Some moments of laughing:):) but roughly well.

The composer Richard Wagner created a work that still today is capturing fascination and Devoted attention from the German Elites. The work of Nietzsche, Wagner dominated the musical preferences of leading Nazis too. Its not possible to understand German mentality-in the full spectrum between light and shadow - without gaining basic understanding and feeling of it. Perhaps in synergy with dealing with work of Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche who was was first friend of Wagner, and remained devotee of his music forever.

Even Juergen Habermas -brilliant German world-known social scientist - once said , when asked about spirituality and dimensions beyond "herrschaftsfreier Diskurs" of Communication:

I" do not hear the music of it:"):)

Well, dear Jürgen, grab deeper in your soul! The twin Impulse of Apollo and Dyonysus isnt over when you have reached some centauric, second tier realzation.  This dance between these different impulses has to be danced at every stage. See the work of your creative opponent Peter Sloterdijk

Many people will have no idea what Wagner Music is all about. Try this:

Valkyrie

Chancellor Angela Merkel is visiting the bombastic event -in Bayreuth -each year and many other Leaders too. She exemplifies -like many other leading people -the HIDDEN Desire for these emotions. Very, very seldom this dimension is openly communicated. In Germany sports like Formula 1 Racing, Soccer etc can moblize these emotions more. Katarina Wagner was laughingly witnessing this in the tV Interview. She has a great  unpretentious perception what is connecting masses and elites.

Maybe similar to author Paulo Coelho who is dealing in another ways with these phenomena. With his special background of beeing native Brazilian. In the German TV ONLINE PROJECT about German Dream which was created by Wolfgang Blau and Alysa Selene you can listen to this Audio Statements from him:

is written by Katarina Wagner who I saw in an TV Interview before the Premiere. She is a remarkable woman and privately hearing Rammstein and other Heavy Metal style. Katarina is right on spot when she writes about Opera and great Feelings. In times of Globalization.
She describes -at least- what is so essential for Germanys roller coaster drive between irrationality and reason, between collective dark passion, ecstasy and poetic feeling.

Another filmmaker who died young, was Rainer Werner Fassbinder:. he once said:

"Der Tod ist ein Meister aus Deutschland."

The faustic yearning (see Goethe) in the "land of poets and thinkers" about "Was die Welt im Innersten zusammenhält" ist Leading Motive. And its located in the midst of extreme thinking and music, of reason and irrationality, of feeling and seeking the Absolute.

This is Katarinas Article:

Destruction of the beauty, good and sublime?

Katharina Wagner

Katharina Wagner über das Regietheater 21st June, 2007

The old granddaughter of the composer stands for the opera of a new generation. Why is the old art(skill) so moulder? How do we hold them(her) in the life? And is the relation still to be saved by direction and audience(public)?

Considerations(Reflexions) of Katharina Wagner
A little bit more than 400 years ago the opera than strangely(funnily) new art form came into the world. Since that time she asserts herself in astonishing(astounding) vitality and is not simply to kill t(otzukriegen). Why it she(it) still gives, is actually puzzling, because nothing less than just the opera seems to be measured for our durchrationalisierten time adequately(acceptably) and. Here the sober professionalism - there poetic feeling exuberance, here the chill(cool) ecstasy of the globalisation - there the dark passion, the mythical dawn and the slope(inclination) to world escape and forgotten, sometimes unconsciously as the highest(top) desire(appetite).

Our everyday life, drily and briefly and from the most dull clearness, sometimes in his(its) deepest, wisest examination(judiciousness) best of all recognizably in the focus of an emptied cocktail glass at the end of the happy Hour - on the other hand the challenging(provocative) ornament of a lofty gesture which embraces the world in the dying(moribund) light shaking. Cryptic Fragwürdigkeit! Where would be there a bridge by which connection(union) would be created? Where generally a relation(connection) available(in existence)? Is it maybe the uncertain longing for size, the desire after affects which we are not mighty(powerful) at all (more) which allow to endure operas to us still lighthearted and cause in us no Widerwort if, for example, vorgeblich dead people or - especially gracefully - lethal lung sick person with impressive strength in well sedate melodies and words, just extremely artificially, her(their) existence aushauchen (at least(anyway), some of the nicest operas have worked out(have calculated) the figures to heroes which suffer from Tbc "schwindsüchtig" are)?

Hallo Albert,
I really liked your article.. until I got to K.W.'s part, where I don't really understand the point she's making (might be the “schmunzelerweckende” Babel - translation. .where it got “lost in translation” maybe? …. but,

about Passion, my personal experience, I believe certain germans have a LOT of it- we know especially about the masters - but it's expression is limited to - when you are lucky to be an artist,  your artistic expression - if not to fotball phanastism.

I left Germany when I was 20 because - besides my very personal situation - I always felt limited in real life to express my passion while I was living in Germany. (That's the thing I wanted to share with you).  Being passionate and express it was then (I don't know now) just not  accepted… ..no feeling showing, pretending we know everything, highly intellectual approach.
I felt much better, for a long time,  in Mexico, where I could be the open hearted, open minded, happy, out loud laughing, friendly and with a Real question to the other of “how are you doing?”. —– I do also believe that this is one of the success factors of mexican opera singers: let passion free… see: Rolando Villazon, Placido Domingo (even spanish, he was raised and influenced in Col. Roma, Mexico City) Ramon Vargas; whereas Francisco Araiza (he lives in germany) opted more for the more “calm” Fritz Wunderlich influence and Schubert's Liederkreise - also because of the nature of his 'light tenor” voice.
But for really transcending, you have to combine passion with intelligence and discipline (about Rolando I know it, because I know him.. for Placido we do know that for a fact, etc..).

Anyway, I have my passion expression with my Opera now (my favourite role is Tosca and I am bewitched by some of Verdi's passions… I don't do Wagner (my voice doesn't)  …. trying to re-adapt to a anglosaxon culture (San Francisco, CA) and I am also aware, that my experience is just a little personal and subjective one…. just a little reflection.
